This is a short form manual for those people who prefer to install their software before reading the manual. Please consult the manuals for any additional information needed. You should also check with La Cie from time to time to find out about manual and software updates.

CHECKING THE CONTENTS
You should have the following if you purchased a Silverscanner from La Cie:
• Hardware:
Silverscanner main unit
50 pin to 25 pin SCSI cable
Power cord.
• Software:

If you have any questions about what you received please call your La Cie sales representative.
Silverscanner is factory set at SCSI address 2. Both address and termination are set through easy to use switches on the back of the scanner.
Be sure each SCSI device has different SCSI ID number.
Be sure to turn termination on if the scanner is at the end of your SCSI bus. If you do switch termination on, you should be sure that no other external SCSI device is terminated.
QUICK START
Undo the transportation screw located at the back center of the scanner before connecting the scanner to a power source. This screw secures the carriage mechanism and protects it from damage due to shock or vibration during transportation. Note: Be sure to tighten this screw before you move the scanner any substantial distance.
Place the scanner on a flat, horizontal, stable surface. Allow enough space above the scanner for easy document placement.
Copy the “Silverscan” control panel into the System Folder on your start up volume and Restart your Mac. Remove any older versions of the control panel or “Silverscan Init”. If the plugin modules fail to display a color image in the preview area then you may need to place a copy of Apple's “32-Bit QuickDraw” system INIT into the System Folder.
Determine which plug-in module you are going to use (you may use all of them). Copy the plug-in module into the appropriate place on your hard disk:
If you are using MicroFrontier's Color It!, Silverscan CI is the plug-in module. Silverscan CI must be in the folder Scanners & Plug-ins which is inside the folder Color It!‚Ñ¢ Stuff. The next time you launch Color It!, Silverscan will be listed under Scan/Import in the File Menu.
If you are using EFI's Cachet, Silverscan Ct is the plug-in module to use. Place Silverscan Ct in the same folder as the Cachet application. The next time you launch Cachet you will be able to access the scanner by selecting "Import…" from the File menu, then selecting Silverscan Ct from the drop down menu of sources, selecting the appropriate mode, and finally clicking on the "Import" button. Hint: You can make the Plugin module the default item in the drop down menu by changing the modules name to sort first alphabetically (".Silverscan Ct" for example).
If you are using Adobe's Photoshop, Silverscan PS is the plug-in module. For PhotoShop 2.5, place Silverscan PS inside the Plug-Ins folder. The next time you launch Photoshop, Silverscan will be listed under Acquire in the File Menu. Next to the Scanning Mode drop down menu is the Portrait/Landscape icon which will determine the orientation of your scan. NOTE: if you are using Photoshop 2.01 or older, Silverscan PS must be in the same folder as the Photoshop Prefs file.
If you are using Silicon Beach's Digital Darkroom, Silverscan DD is the plug-in module. Silverscan DD must be in the same folder as Digital Darkroom Pouch. The next time you launch Digital Darkroom, Silverscan or Acquire will be listed in the File Menu.
If you are using Letraset's ColorStudio, Silverscan CS is the plug-in module. Silverscan CS must be in the same folder as ColorStudio. You may rename Silverscan CS to ColorStudio Scanner and the plug-in will become the default scanner. Next to the Scanning Mode drop down menu is the Portrait/Landscape icon which will determine the orientation of your scan.
If you are using Letraset's ImageStudio, Silverscan IS is the plug-in module. Silverscan IS must be in the same folder as ImageStudio. You must rename Silverscan IS to ImageStudio Scanner for the plug-in to be recognized.
If you are using OLDUVAI's READ-IT! PRO, Silverscan RI is the plug-in module. Silverscan RI must be in the same folder as READ-IT! (or any sub-folder). You must first go the the Scanner Setup… menu to select the Silverscan module, and then go to the Scan… menu to access the scanner.
If you are using B & E Software's RagTime, Silverscan RT is the plug-in module. Silverscan RT must be in the same folder as RagTime. After selecting a Frame and setting it to a Picture, you may then select that Picture. Now, using the main menu Pictures, select Scan from the menu to access the Silverscan RT plugin module.
If you are using a TWAIN compatible application, copy the entire folder "TWAIN" into the Preferences folder within the System Folder on your startup volume. ( For System 6, the "TWAIN" folder simply goes inside the System Folder.) NOTE: If you already have a TWAIN folder in your system, then copy just the Silverscan TWAIN plugin module from this floppy into the TWAIN folder in your system. After doing this, you should be able to use the "TWAIN Select" and "TWAIN Acquire" commands from within your TWAIN compatible application.
Start the application you wish to scan from.
Photoshop and Digital Darkroom use ACQUIRE from the FILE MENU to activate the scanner.
ColorStudio uses GET SCANNER and SCANNER SETUP from the SCAN MENU to activate the scanner. ImageStudio uses SCANNER SETUP and SCAN to activate the scanner.
Note: In most La Cie Plug-in modules a hot key is placed in the application menu the first time you enter the module through the menu. You can use Command ` (or Command ~) to re-enter the module subsequently. (Not available from Cachet or RagTime.)
Note: We will not teach you how to use these applications only how to get a scan. If you have technical questions regarding use of the bundled software you may have to call the appropriate company to get your answers. We will help you the best we can.
SILVERSCANNER PLUG-IN FEATURES
Note: Not all features of plug-ins are available in all programs. All of our Plug-ins are based on a similar format so that you will easily switch from one scan application to another. However, Digital Darkroom will not let you scan in color or won't give you a color preview while Photoshop and ColorStudio will.
• Dynamic preview, no need to wait for prescan to finish to make changes in scan settings, scan area selections or to Acquire.
• From 25 to 4800 dpi in 1 dpi increments.
• From 25 to 400 percent scaling in 1 percent increments.
Horizontal and vertical scaling can be different, click on the LOCK icon in between the scale sliders to implement this feature. After changing the scaling, you can click on the lock again to set the scale ratio.
• Color preview if you have more than 4 colors selected under the Control Panel Monitor Icon.
• Gray scale preview in other scan modes.
• Magnify in preview (Select a small scan area and click on the MAGNIFYING GLASS icon.)
• Proof in preview (Hold down that Option key and click over desired area)
• Portrait or Landscape scan (click on the Page icon) - with Photoshop 2.0 and ColorStudio.
• Tabs on slider bars for easy access to your favorite settings.
• Command ~ hot key to re-enter the plug-in module.
• Optional locks on the SCALED Width and/or Height.
If a scaled width or height is locked, then the scaling is automatically adjusted to that the selected area will always fill the desired scaled width or height.
• Under the Silverscan Menu-color
• Transparency - This menu options appears only if a Transparency option is connected.
• Sheet Feeder - This menu options appears only if a Sheet Feeder option is connected.
• Smooth Shadows - removes speckled tones from just the shadow (dark) areas.
• Calibration - adjust R/G/B setting for brightness, contrast, and gamma.
(Use to adjust color balance. You may also set black/white limits for printer control.)
• Get Parameters - retrieve default scan settings.
• Save Parameters - save your favorite setting as defaults.
PREVIEW MODES
Normal - Click in the Preview button, and the entire image will be scanned at reduced resolution.
Magnify - Select an area of interest, and click on the Magnifying Glass ICON. The selected area will be expanded to almost fill the preview display. You may then change the selection and Magnify even further. To back out, simply select Preview to get the entire page again.
Proof - See a small area at the selected resolution and scanning mode. When you hold down the Option key, the cursor is replaced with a tracking rectangle. This rectangle represents the amount of the image that can be displayed in the preview window using the selected scanning resolution and zoom factor. Move the rectangle to an area of interest and click the mouse button. The selected area will be scanned using the current resolution and scanning mode. This display remains until you release and re-press the Option key, or click the mouse button. The previous image will immediately return.
SCAN MODES
Scanning Mode selections include: Full Color, Color-256, Color-64, Color-8, Gray-256, Gray-16, Gray-4, Halftone and Lineart.
Note: ColorStudio scans all images in 32 bit/pixel mode this means that no matter what scan mode you select to scan, the image size will be that of a full color scan.
Note: ImageStudio scans all images in 8 bit/pixel mode this means that no matter what scan mode you select to scan, the image size will be that of a full gray scale scan.
HALFTONING MODES
Normally 1 and 2 bit/pixel/color data cannot express continuous tones in an image. The halftoning mode processes the image date during scanning so that the output simulates continuous tones when displayed or printed. Halftoning is not suitable for images that require sharper definitions.
4 Halftoning selections are available for the following scan modes:
None: Color-64, Color-8, Gray-4
Sharp: Color-64, Color-8, Gray-4, Halftone
Soft: Halftone
Screen: Halftone
IMAGE
This menu lets you select 1 of 10 built in setting of brightness and contrast, ranging from -6 to +3. Selecting Auto will cause the plugin to examine the selected area and automatically select a brightness/contrast combination to use the full range of colors from dark to light. Set Custom to any desired value by first selecting Other... at the bottom of this menu.
GAMMA CORRECTION
This function adjusts the light intensity ratio between the original image input and the output data so that when the image is reproduced on certain types of output devices, the tones of the image will be closer to that of the original. There are 3 settings that can be combined with all other scanner functions.
Normal: Low light areas are expanded for higher contrast in the shadow area. This setting corresponds to a Gamma = 1.8 and is suited for most color or greyscale images.
None: The output data is in proportion to the original image. This setting corresponds to gamma = 1.0 and is most suited for black and white images such as text and line art.
Custom: Set this to any desired value by first selecting Other... at the bottom of this menu.
COLOR CORRECTION
Color correction is functional only with one pass (line sequence) scanning. The color of a pixel is immediately determined when the pixel is scanned. Color correction provides 3 settings.
CRT Display - Select this if you are most concerned with how the image looks on the display.
None - Use this setting if you intend to color separate the image and send to a printer
Custom - Set this to any desired value by first selecting Other... at the bottom of this menu
SCANNING MODES
•Single pass (line sequence)
The scanner scans the document with one pass of the carriage, reading green, red and blue for every line. This yields more accurate color separation.
•Three pass (page sequence)
The scanner scans the document three times: one each for green, red and blue and produces three pages of image data.
•Monochrome (standard)
The scanner scans the document with one pass and reads the image in monochrome.
COLOR DROPOUT
Dropout color is the color which is not distinguished from white and is not read by the scanner. You can choose a dropout color from green, red or blue. Use can use this command when you do not want a particular color, like a colored background. Color dropout is available in monochrome scanning only.
TYPICAL SCANNER SETTINGS
Scan settings can vary greatly from user to user, system to system and output device to output device. Typical settings that we have found to be useful are available in the Get Parameter command under the Silverscan Menu. One of the most important aspects of this scanner is its ability to scan in many different ways. Do not hesitate to experiment with your own scanner setting. If you find a particular setting useful you may save it using the Save Parameter Command under the Silverscan Menu. If you find a setting that is very helpful to you, let us know so we can pass it on to other users. (Note: If you are planning to do color separations please consider getting a calibrator for your monitor.)
APPLE SCANNER COMPATIBLE SILVERSCAN III CONTROL PANEL
Silverscan III control panel will allow you to use Silverscanner from within any application that can use an Apple grayscale or color scanner. The control panel provides emulation for both types of Apple scanners. That means every application that you can scan from. Remember that some of the Apple scanners are very limited (4-bit, no color), so you will not have access to all of the features of Silverscanner Plug-ins. You will only have full-color capability with software that is compatible with Apple's 24-bit color scanner. You will be able to use any of your favorite OCR programs and other applications including the following tested programs Quark Xpress with extension, Omnipage, READ-IT, AccuText, True Form, Hyperscan, RagTime 3 or other applications that are compatible with the Apple scanner. Just select Apple scanner from the application's scanner setup. You will then be able to scan. Remember to follow the application's directions for using an Apple scanner. Note: Some applications set the scanner up internally and give you very limited controls.
OCR programs can not read all text styles, formats, sizes, etc. Remember that it may not be the scanner's fault if the OCR program of your choice does not give you the results that you are hoping for.
If selectable we suggest for most scans using Apple scanner compatible software:
300 dpi
1 or 2 on brightness
2 or high contrast
